The Bible is unlike any other book which can be fully understood simply by spending time studying it. The Bible is the Word of God given to man by God for man to obey. It is not for man to just read and understand it as head knowledge only. God is pleased with those who obey His Word, and live a sanctified and holy life according to His words.

We are told in Revelation 5:1 that the Apostle John saw “…in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.” The One who holds the book on His right hand is God the Father. The book that God the Father is holding onto is the Word of God which reveals the end times and what will happen to all on earth in the last days. It also reveals the promises that believers of the Lord Jesus Christ will receive.

However, this book is sealed with seven seals. Thus, “…no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon” (Rev 5:3). Because no man is worthy to take the book from the right hand of God the Father and read it, the Apostle John “…wept much…” (Rev 5:4).

However, there is One who is worthy, and He is the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the only Begotten Son of God who fulfilled the promise of God the Father to man when He came into this world, as the descendant of King David, from the tribe of Judah (Rev 5:5), via the virgin birth, to die on the cross for sinful man. Jesus Christ is the only One who is worthy to take the book from the right hand of God the Father, to open it and to reveal it to man so that man may know how to live a life that is pleasing to God.

Therefore, man must always have a high view of the Bible. Our attitude towards God’s Word is the yardstick by which the reality of our salvation can be measured. We ought to be delighted to have the honour of reading and studying God’s Word. The Bible teaches us believers how we can live a life that is pleasing to God. Hence, we must study every verse in the Bible carefully, and prayerfully with the help and illumination of the Holy Spirit, so that we understand (and not misunderstand) any word of God. As we rely on the Holy Spirit, we must also study the Bible diligently and use every means available to help us to understand it. Most importantly, we are to obey God’s words and do what He has commanded us to do in His Word, so that our lives on earth will please Him and glorify Him.
