The Peace Offering: Reconciliation Provided (Lev 3)
The Bible teaches us to forgive even before forgiveness is sought. However, even if forgiveness is sought and given, it does not mean that reconciliation will automatically follow. In our relationship with God, we have offended God. And forgiveness is readily given to us through the Lord Jesus Christ. But we still have to seek reconciliation with God through the Lord Jesus Christ. The peace offering described in Leviticus 3 was not the basis of reconciliation with God. Rather, it was an expression of thanksgiving to show the peace that the children of God then had with God. It was an expression of thankfulness that reconciliation had been given to them. 1 Requirements of the Peace Offering The peace offering was to be offered “on the altar upon on the burnt sacrifice” (Lev 3:5). The burnt offering must be offered first, followed by the peace offering. Thus, it was not the peace offering (but the burnt offering) that brought about atonement of sins. As an expression of thankfulness, the peace offering was offered. 2 Enjoyment of the Peace Offering Some parts of the peace offering were to be removed to be burnt. These parts were the best parts which were to be offered to the Lord. The rest of the animal would be eaten by the worshipper (c.f. Lev 7:15). When eaten correctly, there would be enjoyment of the covenantal blessings. In the Old Testament time, having a meal together was an expression of fellowship and communion with God. Thus, it was a great privilege to have a meal with God. 3 Application of the Peace Offering Today, we have been reconciled to God through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. And we have the peace with God. As a memorial of the peace we have received through our Lord Jesus Christ, we partake of the Lord's Supper. This is the new covenant in Christ's blood. In the partaking of the bread and the cup, we identify ourselves with the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ. Are you at peace with God? The peace we have with God is the source of all other peace. Christ is our Peace because reconciliation has been bought for us by our Lord Jesus Christ. |
