The Privilege of God’s Work (Exod 37)
Doing God's work is always a privilege for us, and we have been given this privilege. Thus, we must have a proper attitude towards serving God. 1. It is a holy work. The furniture constructed (as described in Exodus 37) were holy, specially set aside for God. Once the furniture were consecrated to the Lord, no one could touch them, except for the priests and the high priest. Even though the furniture were not consecrated yet, the work of constructing them was holy work, a privilege that they were given to do unto the Lord. Similarly for us, when we do God's work, it is our privilege because we are doing God's holy work. Not just the work is holy, but also the method that we use to do the work ought to be holy. Every aspect of our lives is a service unto the Lord, and we ought to live our lives as a holy work for the Lord. It is not limited to only our work in church, in school or at work. 2. It is a spiritual work. Even though the construction of the furniture was technical work, it was also a spiritual work. We must not get too caught up with the technical part of our work, but be mindful of the spiritual aspect of our work. The spiritual significance of the mercy seat is that communion with God is a privilege to the people. The spiritual significance of the table of shewbread is that it is reminder to us that God is our provider. As for the golden candlestick, it is a reminder that our God is the pure light. He is the truth. Through Him, we can see the light of truth. And the altar of incense reminds us that our God receives the prayers of His saints. It is our privilege to serve God. We must do it humbly and remember that it is a spiritual work for Him. 3. It is an eternal work. There is eternal value and eternal impact in our work for God. The first Tabernacle is a type of something better to come, as it is a figure of Christ's coming (cf. Heb 9:1-11). And so, the impact of our work for God is not limited to earth. There is a spiritual impact that lasts into eternity. May we see the work we do for God as a great privilege given to us, so much so that we will not want to do other work! |
