Bible Given to Obey (Rev 1:1-3)
Studying the Bible with the right understanding, i.e. for obedience, is the only way. Those who do not obey will face all eternity in the Lake of Fire in great pain and torment. There are three potent arguments for us to obey the Bible: 1. Obey because it comes from the Father (Rev 1:1). This whole revelation is about Christ and is given by Christ to show His servants, who are serving the Lord like slaves. They expect nothing, they demand nothing, but they will give everything, even under the cloud of persecution and to face the stress and strain. That is a slave’s attitude. However, we must serve as children of God, with the attitude of slaves. Thus we are to “Obey because it comes from the Father,” who introduced Himself as God, and it is for those who are serving faithfully. When you are serving faithfully, you are going to face persecution. This book of Revelation will give you the additional strength in the inner man to persevere to the very end, steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord. That is how good this Book is, because you know the end and you know where you are going to be at the end of your life and this world. Without God’s Word, you cannot serve properly in accordance with the Scripture in the right way. 2. Obey because we have experienced it (Rev 1:2). This refers to salvation which we have experienced. The Bible is meant to be obeyed continuously in our life. When we obey the Bible, we will grow in Christlikeness, and the sinners around us will be able to see our amazing Saviour in our lives. With a right understanding of the Bible, we can testify for God. If we delight in God’s Word on earth, we will delight and love God’s Word in heaven because we have experienced the transforming power of His Word. 3. Obey because the time is urgent (Rev 1:3) The time to obey God is now. The time is at hand and the Lord is coming soon. Do not procrastinate, or debate if you should accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour or not, or if you should believe the salvific work of Jesus Christ on the cross or not. In order for us to be convicted and converted, we need the Word of God and the Holy Spirit to help us. We must keep God’s Word in our heart and not let anyone or anything steal our obedience to the Lord. |
