A Man Like-Minded (Phil 2:19-24)
Timothy’s relationship with Paul was “as a son with the father” (Phil 2:22). Paul was his spiritual father. As Timothy was trained by Paul, theirs was also a disciple-master relationship. Paul planned to send Timothy to take care of the spiritual wellbeing of the believers in Philippi because he knew that Timothy was a man like-minded (i.e. of one heart and mind). Timothey would genuinely care for the flock with no hidden agenda. This oneness can be seen from the following perspectives: 1. The spiritual perspective There can be no oneness without Jesus Christ. This like-mindedness must be based on the mind of Christ. Only Jesus Christ is to be promoted and exalted. Otherwise, the church will cease to be a church, and become a cult. Since his conversion, Paul was never interested in self-promotion. His singular focus was to promote Christ, anchored in God’s Word. When a pastor preaches and teaches God's Word, he must make sure that every doctrine that he believes in is clearly established in, and proven by, the Holy Scripture. Once he goes out of this very important boundary, he will begin to promote himself and sow seeds of discord and destroy the church. The oneness must be a spiritual oneness based on biblical doctrines. 2. The faithfulness perspective We may be one in doctrine, and we may all want to promote Christ, but we must all be one in our faithfulness too. We must be trustworthy and dependable, faithfully doing all our duties. We are not to cheat or be lazy. Joseph in the Old Testament is a good example. Pharaoh described servant Joseph as “a man in whom the Spirit of God is…there is none so discreet and wise as thou art” (Gen 41:38-39). Timothy too had proven to be faithful in his tasks, thus Paul could trust him to take care of the spiritual wellbeing of the Philippian church. We also must be faithful in our duty of putting the right people in leadership positions, people who are tested and have proven to serve God faithfully. It must not be done out of convenience using unbiblical criteria. 3. The time perspective The oneness of mind or spirit cannot be rushed. Paul had to wait on the Lord for the right time to ensure that Timothy was ready to be sent to Philippi, and that the people were ready to accept Timothy. Our church leaders may be convicted, and thus earnestly contend for the faith. Those who join the leadership must be equally convicted and have that same spirit before they join the leadership. God’s timing is crucial. We must wait on Him patiently. |
