How to Remember One Another (Phil 1:1-5)
The more we share our life with others, the more they will remember us. How do you want to be remembered by others? Can you be remembered by others when you do not share your life with them? How you live today will determine how you will be remembered. Paul had to deal with the Philippian believers who were stirring up jealousy and strife. He reminded them of how he remembered them while he was in prison. 1) We remember that we are servants of Jesus Christ (Phil 1:1-2) Paul remembered himself as a servant (or slave) of Christ, even though he had accomplished much for Christ. Seeing himself in that lowly position, he was able to forgive those who caused him hurt. We must remember ourselves in relation to Christ. We will not be discouraged when we see ourselves as servants/slaves to Christ. Such a lowly view of ourselves will cause us to be humble and to forgive those who cause us hurt. 2) We remember others by praying for them (Phil 1:3-4) If we remember others, we will pray for them. Paul remembered the Philippian believers with a thankful spirit despite their failings. Believers are a “work-in-progress”. Sanctification takes time. Remembering others with thanksgiving will help us to forgive them. Paul was able to see the blessings which God gave him through the Philippian believers. Thus, he could pray for them with joy. 3) We remember others when we have fellowship with them (Phil 1:5) Only Christians can experience this fellowship in Christ. When we have Christian fellowship, we share our lives with one another and edify one another in the LORD. We are to follow Paul as he followed Christ. We are to remember others in ways that will glorify God. |
